7/8 ANNOUNCEMENTS

7/8 BAND: All grade 7s and 8s wishing to join band please see Mr. Card in room 120 at the beginning of lunch on Wednesday September the 26 for a brief meeting. (IC –Sep 26)

 

7-8 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: There will be a girls volleyball practice on Friday September 28th in the Caf Gym after school (3:00 to 4:30). Please be dressed and ready to start at 3:00. (JB –Sep 28)

CLUBS IN THE TLC:  Students interested in the following clubs are asked to drop by the TLC to sign up.  ~ Graphic Novel/Manga ~ Red Maple Reading Club ~ Game Club ~ Library Helpers.  (CHV –Sep 28)

 

HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

CAPPIES The Cappies Program is still going strong in Ottawa!  If you love plays nd musicals and you love to write, then come out to a Cappies' meeting this Wednesday Sept 26 at lunch in Rm 138.  Bring a sample of your writing with you.  If you've seen a movie or gone to the theatre lately, then review it!  You need to commit to seeing four high school plays and writing reviews for each over the semester.  Cappies are also responsible for setting up the reception room as we will host Cappies from around the city on opening night of Willy Wonka. SR. BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM: The next Senior Boys Basketball team tryout will be Thursday after school from 4:30 PM - 6 PM. This is the final tryout for all interested players.  If you have any questions see Mr. Rowley in room 136. (MR –Sep 27)

CHOIR PRACTICE: Tuesday Sept 25th and Thursday Sept 27 at lunch in room 119. Bring your music folders and please be on time. Extra voices welcome! (SS –Sep 27)

 

NEW YORK CITY: The deadline for the New York City trip is this Friday, September 28th 2102 at 8:40 AM - there are 6 spots remaining for those students still interested in being a part of the trip this May.  To pick of forms or ask any questions see Mr. Rowley in room 136. (MR –Sep 28)

THE STAND UP TO BULLYING SQUAD (SUBS): All students interested in working with the Stand Up to Bullying Squad this year, please meet in the chapel on Monday, Oct 1^st at 11:45. Please eat your lunch first and then come to work! (TC –Oct 1)

HOMECOMING DANCE!  Hey Titans!  This year's Homecoming Dance will be on Thursday, October 4th from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Doors open at 7:15pm.  Tickets are $5 and will be sold from Wednesday, September 26 until Monday, October 1st, at lunch in the atrium.  Guest tickets must be purchased by Friday September 28th.  See you all there! OTTAWA POLICE VENTURERS: Looking to volunteer some of your time to a great cause? You should consider joining the Ottawa Police Venturers.  If you are 14 to 18 years of age and attending a secondary school, interested in learning more about policing, being part of a dynamic team and helping your community, then come a recruitment information night on Wednesday, September 26th 7pm to 8pm at 101 Centrepointe Drive (Ben Franklin Place).  For more information about the Ottawa Police Venturers program, visit ottawapolice.ca or call 613-236-1222 ext 6034. JOSTENS is back to our school on Wednesday, September 26th, Thursday, September 27th, Friday, September 28th, during senior lunch in the atrium, in front of Student Services. There are 14 brand new rings to choose from, so come to Student Services to pick up a leaflet and brochure. Order now to receive your ring before Christmas. (KW –Sep 28)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT MT:  Here's an opportunity to collect community service hours right here at Mother Teresa High School during senior lunch (11:30 am to 12:00 noon) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Please sign up with Mrs. Watkinson in Student Services.  We will be meeting in the Career Centre to cut milk bags and prepare them for the next step in making mats for Haiti.  It's so easy..... THE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP PRESENTS THE ULTIMATE DREAM JOB CONTEST:  From September 3rd to October 14, 2012.  If you are a Grade 9 student, then you are eligible to win great prizes including iPod Shuffles, Nintendo Wiis or even a return trip to Ottawa to meet the Honourable Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons on Take Your Kids to Work Day on November 7, 2012.  How to win?  Just send a photo representing your dream job as well as a brief 25-word explanation.  Please visit www.dreamjobcontest.ca and see poster in the school atrium. GRADE 12’s / GRADS

SCHOLARSHIPS continue to arrive at the school. Check out the student services website for lots of grad information including scholarships at ss.mths.ca.  Guidance counselors will be meeting with all grade 12 students the week of Sept 24th. If you have not seen a grad presentation by Tuesday, Oct 2nd, please pop by Student Services. (TC –Oct 2)

OFFICER’S NOTES – News and Information from our School Resource Officer

GET TO KNOW YOUR SRO… The School Resource Officer Program has been in effect in Ottawa Schools for over 17 years and was established for officers to provide support for school staff, students and parents. SRO’s may be involved in delivering lectures on various topics as well as dealing with incidents which take place at school during school hours or those that have an effect on the overall school environment. When an SRO becomes involved in dealing with an incident it may result in a conversation, mediation or a referral to an intervention or diversion program, or a charge. The School Resource Officer mandate is to build healthy, trusting relationships with youth of all ages by becoming a familiar presence in their schools.

To All Titans:

By our actions we show our faith.  In other words, actions speak louder than words.  Everyone says that they want to help people and that they want to make a difference.  Well, here’s a chance to start.

On Wednesday October 3, every person in this building is urged to bring in one non-perishable food item for the Barrhaven Food Cupboard. 

Dare to stand for something meaningful – help provide food to those struggling in our community.

What does working poor mean?

It means that people are employed but do not make enough money to cover all the family expenses. Many jobs in this region are low paying.

Why the HUGE increase in demand for food in Ottawa?  Because there are not enough good-paying jobs in this city and many people are facing layoffs from the government and High Tech industry (two major employers in this city). 

Could this happen to me and my family? YES! Most families in Ottawa are one or two paychecks away from the food bank.  If one or both parents/guardians were to lose their job, that family would be dependent on the food bank.  Imagine the stress of a single parent family.
