WHOLE SCHOOL

Titans, the Christmas season is approaching and the SMT Key Club is fundraising for Toy Mountain. We will be collecting unwrapped, packaged toys from Monday, December 6- Friday, December 17th. Please bring in your donations and drop them off in the marked bins in the atrium. We are also making Christmas cards to give to people at long term care homes. If you can spare some time to make a card it would really make a difference.  Drop your cards off in the envelope in your classroom. Thank you for helping brighten someone’s Christmas!

 

Spirit week: 

  • Monday December 13th: Ugly Christmas Sweater

  • Tuesday December 14th: Christmas on the beach

  • Wednesday December 15th: Winter Wonderland (Wear White)

  • Thursday December 16th: Christmas Spirit (Wear Red and Green or Christmas decorations, or Christmas Characters, etc) 

  • Friday December 17th: Christmas morning (Cozy day- No PJs)

Other activities: 

  • December 10th: Door decorating (This can be done at any time, but it would be best if it's done before the Spirit week. Custodians will be picking the winners between the 13th and the 15th)

  • 13th - 16th: Candy Grams (Students will be able to get them in the Atrium)

  • 15th: Snowflake chain (Teachers will take some time in class for students to create snowflakes and decorate the halls with them)

  • 17th: Bring a mug for hot chocolate (We are still working out the details for this, stay tuned!) 

  • 17th: BINGO (TBD)

All students in grades 6-11 can access free 1:1 math tutoring with Ontario Certified teachers online Monday-Friday 9am to 9pm and 3:30pm to 9pm Sunday. More information can be found here.

Grad quotes and baby photos are due this Friday December 17th!

Any grade 9 to 12  students interested in being part of the Nordic skiing team, please sign 

Art Portfolio Club: Attention all Grade 11 and 12 students who are applying to post-secondary programs requiring a portfolio (animation, graphic design, architecture, interior design, etc). Mrs. Villeneuve and Mrs. Laviolette would like to help guide you through this process. The Art Room and Media Arts Room will be open on Thursdays from 2-4pm to give you access to materials, supplies and tech equipment to help you complete your portfolios. 

You must sign up outside of room 102 to join the Club. The first session is Thursday, December 9th in room 102!

Win Cash Prizes:

Check out the Business Board outside of room 216 to learn about opportunities to win up to $1,000 for a short video or up to $500 for a short essay.  You don't have to be a business student to win.  There are other opportunities available to you as well.


Every year The Salvation Army counts on regular citizens to fill much needed fundraising positions, whether in a volunteer role or as an employee of our organization.  We are in need of many volunteers for this year as restrictions are loosening and providing us with a better avenue to raise funds for those less fortunate. The Sprott Student Consulting Group (Carleton University) is currently looking for students in grade 11 or 12 interested in acquiring business-related experience. SSCG will allow high school students to acquire practical experience, expand their networks and enhance their management skills. Students will be assisting on projects via carrying out research on particular topics within their abilities as well as attending online team meetings. High school students are expected to commit on average 3 hours per week. With successful completion of the program, high school volunteers will be given reference letters from their respective team leaders. Please contact Daria Ivatsik (DariaIvatsik@cmail.carleton.ca ) if you are interested in this opportunity.

SMT Book Fair - Final day. A huge thank you to all staff, students, and parents for helping to make our fundraiser an amazing success. Thanks to your support, we have so many new books on our shelves ready to check out - just in time to sign out for some fantastic holiday reading. Thanks again and happy reading!!! Open Gym Basketball 

If you are interested in participating in a morning open gym for basketball (7h15 start), please add your name to the sign up sheet near room 240. Depending on the numbers of interested students, we will have 1 or 2 sessions per week and we may divide the sessions between grade 7 and 8. 

We are aiming to start in December.If you have any questions, please see M. MacDonald or Mme Côté.

 

The SMT Book Fair is here! There are two ways to shop:

1. In person: we are set up in our Learning Commons. 

- Enhanced safety measures will be followed

- All students visiting the fair in person, must be accompanied by a teacher.

- No Shipping Fees, as orders are sent directly to our school

All funds raised are used to buy literacy resources for our Learning Commons. Thank you for your support!

Any grade 7 or 8 students that have an interest in Vex IQ robotics and coding, please come by Room 233 at 12:22 pm on Tuesday Dec 7 for a brief meeting to learn more about the Vex IQ Skills Ontario challenge. Some prior experience with coding is useful but not mandatory.

Sr. Girls Volleyball Tryouts: Attention any girls interested in trying out for the Sr. Girls Volleyball team. The first tryout will be Thursday, December 9th followed by another tryout Monday, December 13th and Wednesday, December 15th.

Any grade 11 or 12 boy that is interested in playing CONTACT hockey this year is asked to fill out the sign-up form by no later than December 9th.  QR code is located on the door of room 309 or follow the link below.  Try-out will be on Tuesday December 14 from 2:15-4:15 @ Nepean Sportsplex Rink 2 (back rink) Allen MacDonald.  Full equipment is needed and you will not be allowed to try-out without filling out the form.  Contact hockey experience is mandatory, see Mr. Gervasi in room 309 with any questions.

White Pine Book Club: Our first meeting is today, Monday, December 13th. This book club is open to all high school students and will run during both lunch hours - 11:15 for 9s/10s and 1:50 for 11s/12s. More information is available on our LC.mths.ca site under Clubs. 

Waterloo Math Contest

The Waterloo math contest is back.  It is open to students in grades 9-11.  The contest is written in February, and it takes 60 minutes.  If you are interested in writing this multiple-choice test, please sign up on the form   https://forms.gle/W8bszG7tpZq3gKpPA  by Friday, Nov 26.
