YEARBOOK: Attention yearbook students!  We need your help to finish the last few pages before our last deadline.  Please come by room 103 after school on Wed. Feb. 24 if you would like to help with the layout for these pages.  Any students who have taken photos for the yearbook this semester should come to download their photos if they haven't done so already.  Please see Mrs. Hopkins if you have any questions. GRADE 12 EUCLID CONTEST: Grade 12 EUCLID participants are reminded of the mandatory preparation session on Wednesday, February 24th at lunch in Room 322.  Please see Mrs. Quinlan if you cannot attend. (MQ –Feb 24)

WATERLOO MATH CONTEST: All Grade 9, 10, and 11 Math Enrichment Group students participating in the Waterloo Math Contest should meet in the library this Thursday at 8:45 a.m.  The contest will be written in the library from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Please bring a pencil and your Nspire or calculator. EXPRESSIONS WORKSHOP: The Expressions Workshop will run this year at Confederation High School on April 13.  This is a full day event that offers students the opportunity to participate in drama workshops run by professional actors. The cost for the day is $20 and includes a Subway lunch.  Space is limited so if you are interested, please see Mrs. Rose in room 114. (MR –Feb 25)

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC TRIP IN 2011: Mother Teresa High School is planning a trip to the Dominican Republic.  The trip is planned for February 2011.  The purpose of this trip is to gain a broader understanding of the world and our place within it.  In the Dominican Republic, students will be living with Dominican families, eating Dominican food and communicating a great deal of the time in Spanish.  Through this experience, students will gain a greater appreciation of the struggles of the people in a developing nation.  This trip will definitely not be a holiday.  This trip requires a yearlong commitment from students to weekly meetings and fundraising activities.  If you are a student in grade 10 or 11 and are interested in finding out more about this experience, please attend a meeting in room 133 on Friday, February 26, at HS lunch.  If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Rose or Ms. Morris. WRITING CONTESTS:

• Two new writing contests to consider:
  • The Stephen Leacock Association's Humourous Short Story Competition (1500 words maximum). The Stephen Leacock story must be in to Mrs. Simpson by March 12.

  • OECTA Young Author's Competition.  The OECTA Young Author's competition has a number of categories (poem, short story and non-fiction) for various age groups, and the school deadline is March 1.

LITERACY TEST PREPARATION: All grade 10 students in Ontario will be writing The Ontario Literacy Test on Thursday April 8. Successful completion of this test is a graduation requirement for all Ontario students.  Although many of you are preparing for the test at home, some students may be interested in a little extra individual help with the preparation here at school.  Literacy coaches are available before school, at lunch and after school to help with your preparation.  If you are interested in this extra support, please give your name to Mrs. Watkinson in Student Services. RANT LIKE RICK CONTEST: Memorial University is offering a grand prize valued at $10,000 for the top ranter! High School students are to develop and film their own rant about a topic that is important to them.  In addition to the grand prize, two runner-up prizes for a $2,250 tuition voucher will also be awarded.  Rant like Rick is open to grade 11 and 12 students currently enrolled in high school and who will be eligible to attend Memorial University in September 2010 or 2011.  The deadline for entries is Friday, March 19, 2010.  For more information on how to enter, including detailed rules and regulations, visit www.mun.ca/rant. VOLUNTEER AT QUEENSWAY CARLETON HOSPITAL: Become a volunteer at the Queensway Carleton Hospital during July and August.  Requirements for becoming a student volunteer are: must be 15 years of age by December 31, 2010 and have completed grade 9 by this summer.  You will need to attend an information session by April 9th.  Pick from the following dates: February 25th; March 3, 15, 18, 23; April 7.  Most sessions start at 6pm.  See volunteer binder in Student Services for more information. This program will allow you to experience personal growth through leadership activities embedded in Outdoor Activities as well exposure to Global Citizenship through a trip to Costa Rica. GRADUATING STUDENTS/COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS: A new policy surrounding Community Service Hours has been adopted at Mother Teresa High School.  All graduating students must have completed their forty hours of community service by the date of the school prom if they intend to attend their graduation dance.  This comes about as a result of the practice of some students who left their Community Service Hours to the last month of school and were not able to graduate in June.  We are encouraging all our graduating students to submit their hours by May 14th, 2010. ST. BRIGID’S SUMMER CAMP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: It's here! Staff Employment Opportunities and Counselor in Training Program at St. Brigid's Summer Camp. Employment is open to any student aged 17 or older. Opportunities exist for program staff, counselors, life guards, maintenance staff and kitchen staff. Counselor in training: shadow counseling under the guidance of senior counselors and program staff. 2-week programs open to students aged 15 and 16; 2 sessions for boys in July, and 2 sessions for girls in August. BLACK HISTORY MONTH ASSEMBLY: Our assemblies will run as follows, with each assembly being 50 minutes long:
Period One: 9:15am - All Grade 7, 8, and 9 students will be called to the cafeteria.
Period Two: 10:30am- All Grade 10, 11 and 12 students. Please arrive as quickly as possible as we will have to set up for the lunch break following this assembly.  Any classes remaining behind to stack chairs at the end of the second assembly will be greatly appreciated. We will not have a seating plan for the assembly and staff are expected to remain with the classes they would normally teach to help with supervision. (NM –Feb 18)

Employment is open to any student aged 17 or older. Opportunities exist for program staff, counselors, life guards, maintenance staff and kitchen staff.  Counselor in training: shadow counseling under the guidance of senior counselors and program staff.  2-week programs open to students aged 15 and 16; 2 sessions for boys in July, and 2 sessions for girls in August.  Information and application forms are available in Student Services.  Additional information and forms are found on their web site:  www.stbcamp.ca. RANT LIKE RICK CONTEST: Memorial University is offering a grand prize valued at $10,000 for the top ranter! High School students are to develop and film their own rant about a topic that is important to them.  In addition to the grand prize, two runner-up prizes for a $2,250 tuition voucher will also be awarded.  Rant like Rick is open to grade 11 and 12 students currently enrolled in high school and who will be eligible to attend Memorial University in September 2010 or 2011.  The deadline for entries is Friday, March 19, 2010.  For more information on how to enter, including detailed rules and regulations, visit www.mun.ca/rant. VOLUNTEER AT QUEENSWAY CARLETON HOSPITAL: Become a volunteer at the Queensway Carleton Hospital during July and August.  Requirements for becoming a student volunteer are: must be 15 years of age by December 31, 2010 and have completed grade 9 by this summer.  You will need to attend an information session by April 9th.  Pick from the following dates: February 25th; March 3, 15, 18, 23; April 7.  Most sessions start at 6pm.  See volunteer binder in Student Services for more information. ARE YOU A GRADUATING STUDENT INTERESTED IN A GAP YEAR? Algonquin College has a new Gap Year program called Global Studies. This program will allow you to experience personal growth through leadership activities embedded in Outdoor Activities as well exposure to Global Citizenship through a trip to Costa Rica. GRADUATING STUDENTS/COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS: A new policy surrounding Community Service Hours has been adopted at Mother Teresa High School.  All graduating students must have completed their forty hours of community service by the date of the school prom if they intend to attend their graduation dance.  This comes about as a result of the practice of some students who left their Community Service Hours to the last month of school and were not able to graduate in June.  We are encouraging all our graduating students to submit their hours by May 14th, 2010.
