A REMINDER THAT LENT BEGINS TODAY – ASH WEDNESDAY 

Lenten Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence

“In the Roman rite, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and of abstinence from meat.  The law of abstinence from meat binds those who are 14 and older; the law of fasting binds those from 18-59. Christian fasting obtains its full meaning when we deprive ourselves of food in order in order to be more open for prayer, to share more in the suffering of those who are starving, and to save money to give to the poor.  Fasting is a penitential discipline intended to open our hearts to God and others, a means of purification and spiritual liberation, and a witness to the depth of our faith.”  (Canadian Catholic Bishops) (DH –Feb 17)

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB MEETING: There will be a very important meeting for all environmental club members (grades 7-12) Wednesday at 1:00 in Rm. 204. It will only take about 5 minutes so please be on time. (SR –Feb 17)

BLACK HISTORY MONTH PRESENTATION: Listen up all students!  Remember the Black History Month show on Thursday February 18^th.  Cost is $ 2.00.  All Grade 7, 8 and 9 students should pay their homeroom teachers.  Students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 should pay their Period 2 teachers.  All proceeds go to Haiti!  Last day to buyout is Wednesday February 17^th.  Hope to see you there! GIRLS BASKETBALL PRACTICE: There is a 7/8 girls basketball practice Thursday morning at 7:45.  Please see Mrs. Ragaisis or Ms. Morris if you can't be there. (SR –Feb 17)

ATTENTION 7/8 INTRAMURAL FLOOR HOCKEY PLAYERS: The Floor Hockey Intramurals will be put on HOLD for this week and next, so that we can run our Olympic Intramurals instead.  Please check the schedule to see the changes made and to see when you will play your next game. (MM –Feb 19)

ONTARIO LITERACY TEST: Any students in grade 11 or 12 who have not written the Ontario Literacy Test, or who were unsuccessful in their first attempt at writing it, please come to the office and have your name put on our list.  The successful completion of the test is a requirement to receive a high school diploma.  Please make sure this is done as soon as possible. STAND UP TO BULLYING MEETING: There will be a very important Stand Up to Bullying Meeting Wednesday, Feb 17th at 11:45 in the Career Centre. All members who signed up to help for the activity days must attend. (TC –Feb 17)

SPAIN & PORTUGAL TRIP: Students participating in the Spain/Portugal trip this year please bring in your trip permission forms, coloured copies of your passport and $160 payable to Mother Teresa this week, if you haven't already done so.  Also don't forget to fill out your menu order form and bring your $15 for the Spanish Evening at Mambo and return it to Ms. Stewart in Rm 130 by Friday February 19th. WRITING CONTESTS:

• Two new writing contests to consider:
  
  
  • The Stephen Leacock Association's Humourous Short Story Competition (1500 words maximum). The Stephen Leacock story must be in to Mrs. Simpson by March 12.
    
  • OECTA Young Author's Competition.  The OECTA Young Author's competition has a number of categories (poem, short story and non-fiction) for various age groups, and the school deadline is March 1.

ST. BRIGID’S SUMMER CAMP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: It's here!  Staff Employment Opportunities and Counselor in Training Program at St. Brigid's Summer Camp. Employment is open to any student aged 17 or older. Opportunities exist for program staff, counselors, life guards, maintenance staff and kitchen staff.  Counselor in training: shadow counseling under the guidance of senior counselors and program staff.  2-week programs open to students aged 15 and 16; 2 sessions for boys in July, and 2 sessions for girls in August.  Information and application forms are available in Student Services.  Additional information and forms are found on their web site:  www.stbcamp.ca. RANT LIKE RICK CONTEST: Memorial University is offering a grand prize valued at $10,000 for the top ranter! High School students are to develop and film their own rant about a topic that is important to them.  In addition to the grand prize, two runner-up prizes for a $2,250 tuition voucher will also be awarded.  Rant like Rick is open to grade 11 and 12 students currently enrolled in high school and who will be eligible to attend Memorial University in September 2010 or 2011.  The deadline for entries is Friday, March 19, 2010.  For more information on how to enter, including detailed rules and regulations, visit www.mun.ca/rant. VOLUNTEER AT QUEENSWAY CARLETON HOSPITAL: Become a volunteer at the Queensway Carleton Hospital during July and August.  Requirements for becoming a student volunteer are: must be 15 years of age by December 31, 2010 and have completed grade 9 by this summer.  You will need to attend an information session by April 9th.  Pick from the following dates: February 25th; March 3, 15, 18, 23; April 7.  Most sessions start at 6pm.  See volunteer binder in Student Services for more information. ARE YOU A GRADUATING STUDENT INTERESTED IN A GAP YEAR? Algonquin College has a new Gap Year program called Global Studies. This program will allow you to experience personal growth through leadership activities embedded in Outdoor Activities as well exposure to Global Citizenship through a trip to Costa Rica. GRADUATING STUDENTS/COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS: A new policy surrounding Community Service Hours has been adopted at Mother Teresa High School.  All graduating students must have completed their forty hours of community service by the date of the school prom if they intend to attend their graduation dance.  This comes about as a result of the practice of some students who left their Community Service Hours to the last month of school and were not able to graduate in June.  We are encouraging all our graduating students to submit their hours by May 14th, 2010. VALENTINE/FUNDRAISER FOR HAITI DANCE: When: Friday, February 12th - 1:30 - 3 PM Who: Grade 7 & 8 Students Admission cost: $2 per student Why: 100% of the proceeds going towards the Development and Peace Organization to assist those affected by the earthquake in Haiti. DJ Luc will be providing the music. Dress code: wear something red to show your support for a worthy cause and your festive spirit. (optional) Tickets on sale February 4 - 11. NEW YORK CITY TRIP: There will be an important meeting for all students attending the New York City Trip on Friday, February 12^th at lunch in room 135. Room assignments, final deposit information as well as what documents you need, will be discussed at this meeting. If you cannot attend, please see Mrs. Bell-Dagenais as soon as possible. TEEN READ CLUB BOOK ORDERS: Juvenile detention, history, soldiers, secrets, vampires, zombies, pizza, kidnapping, plagues, filmmaking.... Great books at great prices. STRATFORD 2010: The $100 deposit and permission form MUST be returned by February 26 or the trip to Stratford will have to be cancelled.
