Student Council Elections: Students in grade 8 are encouraged to run for Gr. 9 class rep positions on the Mother Teresa Student Council for 2007-2008. Here is the list of choices: Architecture/civil Technology, Applied Museum Studies, Engineering Manufacturing Studies, Hospitality/tourism, Interior Decorating, Journalism, Message Therapy, Personal Support Worker, Police & Public Safety, Pre-service Firefighter/Paramedic program, Recreation, Television Broadcasting, The Business Game, Theatre Arts, Veterinary Technician, Water and Waste Management. Students should sign up in Student Services before Friday, April 13.

Frontier Trail Camp: Frontier Trail Camp is a Christian camp for young people in Eganville - 2 hrs from Ottawa. They are looking for camp counsellors, cooks, swim instructors, life guards, etc. They have horse back riding, ESL for French children, music, drama, trampoline, canoeing, hiking, crafts, swimming, etc. Marie Tubby is the contact at 1-613-625-2416. She is coming to Ottawa on Thursday, April 12, in the evening and is planning to do some interviews so people don't have to drive to Eganville. For more information for work, check out the website: Frontiertrailcamp.com - check out their photo gallery - it looks like fun. The work runs around mid June until Aug 25 - students stay there for the summer.

Students are invited to collect litter from these turtles' habitat and to work with biologists to identify and count turtles. Five hours would work towards the students' volunteer hours for each day worked. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn about Species at Risk, aid in the efforts to protect them, helping to create new habitat opportunities for these turtles who wonder up onto the roads. Youth Action Day: Be sure to mark Saturday, May 5, 2007 on your calendar, because co-hosts Volunteer Ottawa and United Way/Centraide Ottawa invite you to the biggest Youth Action Day ever seen in the city! Once again this year, hundreds of youths between the ages of 13-18 will volunteer their time and help out their community! Community organizations around Ottawa will be requesting volunteers to assist with all kinds of projects, from serving meals to seniors, to painting a youth centre, to fixing up a park. This event is a great opportunity to get involved in your community while receiving 8 hours towards your required 40 of community involvement.


How to Participate:

1. Get a team of friends together (aged 13 to 18)

2. Remember, each team requires a supervisor who is 18 or older. They could be a friend, family member, teacher, youth worker etc.

3. Visit the Youth Action Day website at http://www.youthactionjeunesse.ca

4. Sign up your team on our Online Registration system. Once you have completed the registration form, you will receive a password, which will allow you to browse available projects and select the one that’s right for your team!

Lenten Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence

In the Roman rite, Ash Wednesday and, Good Friday (which is tomorrow) are days of fasting and of abstinence from meat. The law of abstinence from meat binds those who are 14 and older; the law of fasting binds those from 18-59.

Christian fasting obtains its full meaning when we deprive ourselves of food in order in order to be more open for prayer, to share more in the suffering of those who are starving, and to save money to give to the poor. Fasting is a penitential discipline intended to open our hearts to God and others, a means of purification and spiritual liberation, and a witness to the depth of our faith.” (Canadian Catholic Bishops)

Want to Build a House for H.S. Credits: If you have an interest in carpentry or construction and would like to take part in building a house in conjunction with Minto Homes, sign up for the special Focus program that will take place during next school year, in the first semester, starting Sept. 4. You will receive four H.S. credits and work four days a week (Fridays off) learning how to build a house. All work is done on site in Chapman Mills. In the second semester you return to Mother Teresa and take 4 regular courses. Students must be 16 years of age by September 1, 2007. For an application or more information, see Mr. Norris in Student Services.

Grads: Don't forget to get measured for your graduation cap and gown in room 322 any time during the day (not during one of your classes!). The grad fee is $65.00. The cheque should be made payable to "Mother Teresa H.S.".

You will receive four H.S. credits and work four days a week (Fridays off) learning how to build a house. All work is done on site in Chapman Mills. In the second semester you return to Mother Teresa and take 4 regular courses. Students must be 16 years of age by September 1, 2007. Track and Field: All high school track and field athletes are reminded that pre-season training has started. Practices will be held Thursday and Friday of this week in the wood floor gym. All athletes wishing to compete in this year's season must be aware that the pre-season training is mandatory in order to be eligible to compete during the regular season. Volunteer Hours Opportunity: Help celebrate "Barrhaven Kids from around the World", an event which will be held in conjunction with Ross' annual CHEO fundraiser on June 3, 2007. The event runs most of the day in the parking lot of Ken Ross' Independent Grocer and any money raised goes directly to CHEO. We are hoping to have different showcases of the diverse culture in Barrhaven. There will be booths set up for arts and crafts to be displayed. Volunteers Needed for Ottawa Race Weekend: The Ottawa Race Weekend, Canada's premier running festival, combines competition, participation and fundraising to make a distinctive contribution to the health of the community. The event has over 30,000 participants in nine races, including the ING Ottawa Marathon and the MDS Nordion 10K. This year, the Race Weekend is scheduled for May 26-28. We need volunteers to work in many different areas. When you sign up to volunteer you can choose the volunteer job that most interests you or that you are best qualified for. Community Service Hours: Youth Action Day is a day in which hundreds of youth between the ages of 13 and 18 come out and help others in the community. Young people volunteer their time helping community organizations complete hands-on projects and get community services hours. This year projects could include spring cleaning, painting, gardening, serving meals to seniors, fundraising activities and projects that help the environment. Ambassadors are youth who will help promote Youth Action Day 2007 within their own schools, communities and faith groups. These are the youth that will lead the charge to making this year’s Youth Action Day an AMAZING success! Extra volunteer hours will be awarded to all ambassadors for the training session, promotion time of the event, and the day of the event as well. **IMPORTANT NOTE**: Ambassadors are expected to attend a training session to be held on Wednesday March 28th 2007 at United Way Ottawa - 363 Coventry Road, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

Games Room: Mother Teresa has a new games room open to all students before and after school. Come check it out, we are located in the Dance studio (near the Gym) - all activities are $1 - ping pong, air hockey, foosball and pinball. High school students can come at lunch and 7/8's can sign up for upcoming lunchtime tournaments that will be advertised in homeroom. All money raised goes to the school phys. ed. department.
