WHOLE SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Friday June 8^th is a PD Day for all students.

OVERDUE BOOKS AND FINES: Students with overdue books and fines are asked to go to the Learning Commons after morning announcements. (MP –Jun 7)

DRESS CODE:  As the warm weather moves in, we would like to remind all students and parents, of the dress code rules for our school (from page 8 of the Student Agenda).  Please note that these rules WILL be enforced, and students will be required to change, as necessary. We thank you for your co-operation.  

• All students are asked to wear clothes that are clean and in good taste, and appropriate for a Catholic school environment.

• Low-cut tops, tops with bikini straps, crop tops, muscle shirts, t-shirts with unacceptable language/pictures are not permitted.

• Clothing with messages/advertisements relating to alcohol, drugs or tobacco is not acceptable.

• Sleeveless blouses/shirts are permitted providing they are not low-cut in the front, back or sides. All tops must cover the shoulders.

• Clothing that permits the exposure of the navel is not acceptable.

• Shorts/skirts are permitted provided they are at least mid-thigh length.

• Torn jeans and clothing that reveals undergarments are not acceptable.

• Chains, studs, etc. are not permitted.

• In addition, students are not permitted to wear jackets, hats, headgear or bandanas inside the school building at any time. (MEA –Jun 7)

FREE FITNESS MEMBERSHIP FOR TEENS AGES 12-17: GoodLife Fitness wants teens to get fit and have fun this summer.  Free fitness memberships are available from July 3 - August 31, 2012.  Register online at goodlifefitness.com/teenfitness starting June 1, 2012. (CHV –Jun 15)

 

7/8 ANNOUNCEMENTS       

ATTENTION GRADE 7 AND 8 STAFF AND STUDENTS: A reminder that this Thursday June 7th is Melissa's Walk.  Classes will convene behind the school at 1:45 PM.  A brief history of the walk and introduction of Melissa's parents will follow and then we'll start walking.  Freezies will be sold after the walk for .50 cents.  Try and bring exact change or at least small denominations.  Donations will also be accepted.  All profits will go to support research in children's cancers.  The weather is looking good so don't forget your sunscreen and comfortable footwear! CALYPSO!!! CALYPSO!!  Just a reminder that permission forms and payment are due by this Thurday, June 7th.  Please be sure to hand it in to your homeroom before then to make sure that you can join us on the trip! Extra forms can be downloaded from MTHS website. (AJ –Jun 7)

 

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING A PEER HELPER NEXT YEAR? There is an information meeting for all GRADE 8 students interesting in being a peer helper next year, Monday, June 11th at 12:45pm in room 102. Please eat your lunch and meet in the atrium when everyone goes outside. You will not need a pass. If you cannot attend, or have any questions please see Ms. Stuart anytime in room 102 (art room).  (CS –Jun 11)

 

HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

HS HOCKEY AND RUGBY JERSEYS: A reminder to members of the high school Hockey and Rugby teams to bring in their jerseys to Mr. Gervasi or Mr. Taylor.  Deadline is the week of June 4^th. (MG –Jun 7)

ATTENTION ALL GR. 9 AND 10 STUDENTS INTERESTED IN BEING A PEER HELPER NEXT YEAR:  Please come to an important information meeting on Monday, June 11 at lunch in room 302. Please be prompt. (MB –Jun 11)

HS ATHLETIC AWARDS BANQUET: High School Athletes are reminded that this year's Awards Banquet will be Wednesday, June 13th, here at MT. Dinner at 6:30pm and Presentations at 7:30pm. Tickets will be available to all athletes on Monday to Wednesday (Jun 11 – 13) at the Tuck Shop. (JL –Jun 13)

 

STUDENT SERVICES 

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS/VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Barrhaven Run for Roger's House will take place locally next Saturday, June 9. They are in need of 40 more volunteers! If you would like to volunteer, please send an email to volunteers@barrhavenrun.ca or see Mrs. Pasco in room 137. Thanks for your help! (NP –Jun 7)

SUMMER SCHOOL REGISTRATION: Forms are available in Student Services and they must be signed by a Guidance Counsellor.

1) OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD SUMMER SCHOOL dates are from July 4th to July 25th. Pre-register from May 1st up until June 22nd, 2012 in Student Services. After June 22nd, registration takes place at summer school locations on  Tuesday, July 3rd, 9am to 2pm.

2) OTTAWA CARLETON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD. SUMMER SCHOOL dates are from July 4th to July 27th. Registration May 1st - June 8th. Daytime registration is from 9 am to 3:30 pm at the Albert Street Education Centre, 440 Albert Street. Evening registration at the high school of your course choice; May 15th (6pm to 7:30pm) at Sir Robert Borden and Longfields Davidson Heights Secondary School;  Final Registration for Make-Up courses only is Wed June 27, 9:00am - 4:30pm or Thurs June 28, 9:00 - 7:00pm at 440 Albert Street (JH –Jun 7)

VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEER! Several Volunteer Opportunities are taking place during the months of June, July and August. Please go to Student Services for further information. Some current opportunities include:

 

1. Looking for a tutor for a Grade 5 student attending St. Andrew Elementary School.  Please contact Mr. or Mrs. Gera at 613-825-3111.

STAFF NOTES

JEANS DAY: A reminder that Thursday June 7^th is Jeans Day.  This week our contributions will go toward Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind, in Manotick.   Your generosity is greatly appreciated. (SD –Jun 7)

BARRHAVEN TAKES A BITE OUT OF BREAST CANCER!  Bring your family, friends or co-workers out for dinner to one of our participating Barrhaven restaurants on Thursday, June 7, 2012 between 4:00pm and 9:00pm and help make a difference one meal at a time! Participating restaurants will donate 15% of your bill to the CIBC Run for the Cure.  All donations are put towards funding local breast cancer research, education and awareness programs in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. The participating restaurants are as follows:

OFFICER’S NOTES – News and Information from our School Resource Officer

GET TO KNOW YOUR SRO… The School Resource Officer Program has been in effect in Ottawa Schools for over 17 years and was established for officers to provide support for school staff, students and parents. SRO’s may be involved in delivering lectures on various topics as well as dealing with incidents which take place at school during school hours or those that have an effect on the overall school environment. When an SRO becomes involved in dealing with an incident it may result in a conversation, mediation or a referral to an intervention or diversion program, or a charge. The School Resource Officer mandate is to build healthy, trusting relationships with youth of all ages by becoming a familiar presence in their schools.
