·         925 million people do not have enough to eat — more than the populations of USA, Canada and the European Union combined.

·         98% of the world's undernourished people live in developing countries.

·         Two-thirds of the world's hungry live in just 7 countries: Bangladesh, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia and Pakistan.

·         Where is hunger the worst?

clip_image004LET'S CHAT YOUTH CAFÉ: Be heard. Have your say. The Ottawa Police Service and the Ottawa Police Services Board are hosting a Let's Chat Youth Café because it's their turn to listen! Come join a real police-youth conversation and explore the issues that matter to you and your friends in small group table chats. You'll eat free food and maybe even win an iPod or Sens tickets! clip_image014WRESTLING TEAM: Any 7/8 student (girls and boys) interested in joining the 7/8 wrestling team, are asked to sign up outside of Mr. Quinn's office by the end of the week.  The first practice will be next Monday (Oct. 24) in the cafeteria gym. (TQ –Oct 21)

clip_image016LIBRARY/LEARNING COMMONS HELPERS: If you are interested in helping out in the Titans Learning Commons (TLC) drop by the Learning Commons at the start of lunch on Friday, October 21. Bring your lunch. (CHV –Oct 21)

clip_image0177/8 INTRAMURAL SPECTATORS:  Starting on Tuesday, there will be a sign up sheet posted outside the Phys Ed offices, for anyone wishing to be a spectator at the lunchtime intramurals.  The list will be posted at 8:15 and taken down at 8:30 every day.  The first 30 people to sign up will be admitted into the gym to watch.  If your name is not on the list, you will not be allowed in.  You may only sign yourself up, and cannot sign up a group of friends.  We are limiting the amount of spectators due to safety concerns of having over a hundred spectators, and having too many instances of garbage being left behind.  Players who play on any given day do not need to sign up, but still need to be present, in the gym, by the beginning of the first game (12:40). STUDENT COUNCIL: Grade 7/8 Student Council will meet on Monday, October 24 in Room 235 at the beginning of 7/8 Lunch. (TC –Oct 24)

clip_image021HALLOWEEN DANCE:  The dance will take place the afternoon of October 28th. Tickets for this event will be sold Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for $2. You can buy your tickets through your homeroom teacher. Make sure to bring spare change to the dance since there will be an opportunity to buy tickets to win lots of great prizes!  See you there in your black and orange attire! (AJ –Oct 26)

clip_image023READ -A- THON: Mother Teresa Learning Commons will be hosting the Grade 7/8 Read-A-Thon on November 3, 2011. This fun day of reading, guest speakers and prizes is open to any Grade 7 and 8 students.  Pledge sheets are available in the Learning Commons. (CHV –Oct 28)

 

HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

clip_image025HISTORY FIELD TRIP: There is an important meeting for all grade 11 and 12 Ancient History students planning on attending the field trip to The ROM and Medieval Times, TODAY at LUNCH, in Room 305.  Please see Mrs. Galbraith if you cannot attend. (MG –Oct 21)

B.U. GIRLS LEADERSHIP:  Meeting on Friday (Oct. 21) at Lunch time in the chapel.  Please be on time and bring your lunch with you. (MD –Oct 21)

clip_image027IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL STUDENTS ATTENDING THE HOMECOMING DANCE!!
1.  Doors open at 6:45pm.  No one will be admitted early.  Entry is at the side of the school ONLY.

2. There will be no re-entry. Once you leave, you are not allowed to come back in.

3. All students must have a student card (or note from VP).

4. Guests must have their own student card from their school.

5. Guests must arrive with their MT student host.

6. ALL BAGS will be searched.

7. All coats and bags must be checked at the coat check for the entire dance.

8.  Students will NOT be allowed access to their lockers.

9. Doors close at 8:30 pm. There will be no one admitted after this time (unless previous arrangements have been made).

10. The dance ends at 10:00pm - be sure to arrange transportation home.

We hope everyone has a great time at our Homecoming dance!!

BOYS VOLLEYBALL:  There is a home game Tuesday October 18th against Notre Dame, another home game on Thursday October 20th against Holy Trinity.  On Monday October 24 there is an away game at Ridgemount and a home game on Thursday October 27th and our last game for the regular season is at home Tuesday November 1st against St Pius. clip_image037HOUSE OF COMMONS PAGE PROGRAM: Student Services has some promotional materials concerning the House of Commons Page Program for the 2012-2013 Academic Year. More information is available on the Parliament of Canada Web site.  Applications must be submitted online at www.parl.gc.ca/hocpage. Senior HS students who maintain an average of 80% and who are fluent in both official languages are invited to apply.  Also, to be eligible, students must also be accepted at a university in the National Capital Region and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Deadline for applications this year is Thursday, December 22, 2011. (KW –Oct 21)

clip_image043URGENT NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22: It's the fall clean up the capital - the wetlands on Lester Road, between the Airport Parkway and Albion Road. Home to four of Ontario's eight turtle species.  You are invited t ocollect litter from these turtles' habitat and along the road.  4+ hours of volunteer work.  Please call Cheryl Doran at 613 290-9968. clip_image045ALGONQUIN COLLEGE OPEN HOUSE:  On Thursday, November 3rd Student Services is providing a bus for 40 Grade 12 students interested in finding out about all that the college has to offer. You will have the opportunity to talk to professors and check out the vast array of programs. Student's will leave M.T. at 8:40 am and return at 1:30 pm. ANDREW'S PARISH WELCOMES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO VOLUNTEER IN THE CHURCH:  Require help with set up Saturdays from 3:00 pm to 4:15pm, sometimes longer.  Once a month (last Saturday of the month) there is baptism set up in the atrium and we need help with chair set up. Students need to show up at 3pm and they will be put to work setting up chairs, tables or the sound system if they know how to set up this equipment. (KW –Oct 26)

clip_image049VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR INFLUENZA CLINIC: The Ottawa Public Health Influenza Immunization Campaign is underway and looking for student volunteers to assist the clinic staff with set up, displays, greeting people, giving out forms, helping with the survey, etc. We have a flu clinic at our school on Wednesday, November 30th.  See Student Services for more information. Volunteer tab to search for volunteer opportunities.  There are numerous volunteer opportunities during the school year.  At times, there are too many to post in the written announcements. clip_image057GRADUATION INFO:  The MT Graduation Ceremony for the class of 2012 will be held at Mother Teresa on Thursday June 28 at 1:00 pm. Each student will be given 2 tickets for guests. Students will be able to request extra tickets starting in May and will be informed whether they will get extra tickets, in early June. (JH –Oct 21)

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO:  Fall Campus Days are the open house events of the year.  U of T St. George is Saturday, October 29th; U of T Mississauga is Sunday, October 30th and U of T Scarborough is Saturday, November 19th. (KW – Oct 21)
