CoRP: Community for Relief in Pakistan

TODAY will be your last opportunity to donate for relief in Pakistan. The situation in Pakistan is becoming increasingly critical, in spite of the fact that the North American media seems to be ignoring it!

MYTH: Survivors have lost everything except the clothes they stand up in. The best response is to give them second-hand clothes. Ebrahim Mohamed, head of British relief agency Muslim Aid, said after the Pakistan earthquake in October 2005: “We’ve been getting all sorts of offers of used clothing, and food. We tell people very nicely that getting this there is very costly. Money is the best way of getting this across. And it helps local economies.’’

If you have not yet made a donation, or wish to make a further donations, please do so by Monday. Donations should be brought to the library. Thank you for your generosity.

The situation in the mountains of Pakistan remains critical. "Those wounded in the mountains have far nastier injuries than those hit by a hurricane or tsunami. Much of the earthquake area is accessible only on foot or by helicopter (these have often been grounded by bad weather as winter sets in). With scant medical facilities, doctors are being forced to carry out amputations without anesthesia, even on children."

CoRP: Committee for Relief in Pakistan.

"The road to the remote Neelum valley, north of Muzaffarabad, was finally opened yesterday, a month after the earthquake. Before the bulldozers had even finished clearing away the last of the rubble, the people started coming down out of the hills. They walked, some for more than 30 miles, to Muzaffarabad to beg for food and tents, then they turned around and set off back up into the hills, carrying whatever they had been able to get with their bare hands.

It was a Biblical scene, the people pinched with hunger and coated with dust. Many were clearly exhausted, but such was their desperation they had to go on. They carried their food and tents in anything they could get their hands on, old suitcases and bits of sack.

The charity World Vision says that aid still has not reached 250,000 earthquake survivors in Pakistan. These are the people the international community has failed. With winter looming, the relief effort remains desperately underfunded. Within weeks, the "second massive wave of death" warned of by UN secretary general Kofi Annan may begin."

CoRP's goal is to raise $2000+ here at Mother Teresa.
Today is your last opportunity to donate.
Please give generously.

CoRP: Committee for Relief in Pakistan.

Published: 10 November 2005: Refugees from far-flung mountain villages are on the move in search of shelter before the first snowfalls. The relief effort for the homeless is desperately under-funded and disease has struck the camps.

Justin Huggler reports from the Neelum Valley that time is running out for Yassir Batt. A month on from the Kashmir earthquake, he still has no shelter to sleep under. When night falls, he and his brothers huddle together around a fire beside the ruins of their home in the mountains above Muzaffarabad.

The official death toll from last month's earthquake in Kashmir has risen to at least 87,350 following a new assessment of casualties in the Pakistani part of ...
There are two critical needs that require immediate and sustainable response and for which immediate solutions need to be found. The first need is providing medical care and medicines to the injured since all government hospitals in the area have been destroyed. Teams of independent doctors from other parts of the country along with army medical staff are providing some basic access, however a recently set up army medical camp in Muzaffarabad seems to have no bandages, gauze or painkillers. The second medium to short term requirement is to provide some kind of shelter before the winter sets in.
